October 28

Plastic-Free Drive at SV Zoological Park Organised by NSS UNIT School ofEngineering MBU. Department of Mechanical Engineering

Mohan Babu University (MBU), in collaboration with the SV Zoological Park, initiated a community project led by National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit and the Department of Mechanical Engineering. Under the theme of “Enhancing biodiversity conservation and promoting wildlife awareness,” the project aimed to foster a deep sense of environmental responsibility through activities such as habitat restoration, animal care education, waste management, and eco-friendly initiatives. The drive focused on addressing the detrimental impact of plastic waste on wildlife and the environment, promoting sustainable alternatives, and advocating for effective recycling practices within the zoo premises. Through multiple awareness programs conducted during the event, students educated zoo visitors on the importance of reducing single-use plastics and the role each individual plays in environmental conservation.

KEY ACTIVITIES: –

  • Plastic Waste Collection: Volunteers actively collected plastic waste across various areas of the zoo, ensuring that all gathered materials were set aside for recycling.
  • Educational Outreach: Volunteers engaged with zoo visitors, raising awareness about the impact of plastic pollution on ecosystems and encouraging sustainable practices.

OUTCOMES: –

The Plastic-Free Drive at SV Zoological Park provided significant environmental and educational outcomes, including:

  1. Enhanced Environmental Awareness: Volunteers and zoo visitors gained insights into the importance of sustainability and the impact of plastic pollution on natural habitats.
  2. Plastic Waste Collection & Recycling: By collecting plastic waste for recycling, the drive helped reduce pollution in the zoo, fostering a cleaner and more eco-friendly environment.
  3. Promoted Sustainable Practices: Visitors and participants were inspired to adopt more sustainable habits, in line with the global goals of reducing plastic waste.

Following the drive, MBU students utilized the collected plastic waste to create “upcycled models“representing wildlife and eco-systems. These eco-themed art installations will soon be displayed at the zoo, serving as a powerful visual reminder of the harmful effects of plastic on nature and encouraging the public to embrace recycling and waste reduction to protect biodiversity.
