Optometry is a healthcare profession that focuses on diagnosing and treating issues related to vision and eye health. It involves more than just prescribing glasses and lenses. Optometrists screen for various signs of eye diseases, provide specialist advice and treatment, and promote ocular hygiene. It’s a dynamic field that covers a wide range of intricacies related to eye health.

Some of the common areas covered by Optometrist are:

  1. Can provide comprehensive eye examination including ophthalmic investigations, identification and management of eye diseases (Strabismus, Cataract, Diabetic retinopathy, Glaucoma etc.) and referral for Special ocular and systemic conditions. 
  2. Correct refractive error and provide spectacle prescription 
  3. Able to fit, evaluate, prescribe and dispense contact lenses for refractive correction and other conditions 
  4. Able to evaluate the low vision and provide necessary aids and lifestyle management for Low vision care.
  5. Skilled in identifying error in Optical properties of spectacle lenses, contact lenses and low vision devices. 
  1. Can do binocular vision assessment, manage non-strabismic binocular vision anomalies, and refer conditions that need surgery 
  2. Able to assess the visual demands for various occupations and match them to the visual capabilities. Also, be able to advise on eye safety wear for various occupations. 
  3. Have knowledge on sensory substitution and other rehabilitation measures for totally visually challenged. 
  4. Have knowledge of counselling on visual/ocular hygiene, nutritional and environmental modifications
  5. Have Knowledge about Genetical Counselling for certain genetical Ocular conditions.

During the program, students are trained to perform a comprehensive eye examination and provide appropriate optometric management. Students are provided training in the areas of contact lens, low vision, binocular vision, and optical dispensing during the course along with participation in various national-level community-based eye screening camps.
