ASCE MBU Student Chapter Impactful Field Visit to the Construction Site of Rigid Pavement

February 4

The Department of Civil Engineering at Mohan Babu University organized a Field Visit to the Construction Site of Rigid Pavement – Cement Concrete Road within the university campus at Tirupati. The visit was conducted for B.Tech. VI Semester Civil Engineering students on 4th February 2025, from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The objective of the program was to provide students with practical knowledge regarding the construction details of civil engineering structures, a crucial aspect for aspiring civil engineers. The primary goal of this field visit was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application. The students had an opportunity to gain insight into rigid pavement construction techniques, to Understand the materials and machinery used in cement concrete road construction, learn about the quality control measures and specifications followed during construction and to explore advancements in construction technologies.

The visit was organized under the guidance of Mr. D. V. Purushottam, Assistant Professor and Faculty Advisor of ASCE MBU Student Chapter.  A total of 13 students from B.Tech. VI Semester Civil Engineering, accompanied by faculty members, participated in this visit. The visit was organized under the guidance of Mr. D. V. Purushottam, The office bearers of ASCE MBU Student Chapter also played a crucial role in the successful execution of the event.

During the visit, students were able to observe and learn about the following aspects: Preparation of Subgrade and Subbase: Understanding the significance of soil stabilization and compaction for a durable foundation. Concrete Mixing and Placement: Observing the mixing proportions and transportation of concrete using transit mixers. Reinforcement Details: Understanding the role of reinforcement in rigid pavement construction and its positioning. Finishing Techniques: Witnessing the use of vibrators for compaction and finishing tools for smooth pavement surfaces. Curing Process: Learning about different curing techniques to enhance the strength and durability of the concrete pavement.

The field visit was highly beneficial for the students, enabling them to correlate classroom concepts with real-world construction practices. It provided them with hands-on exposure to modern construction techniques, reinforcing their understanding of rigid pavement structures. The event was well-received by the students and faculty, emphasizing the importance of practical learning experiences in engineering education.

The Department of Civil Engineering extends its gratitude to Mohan Babu University for facilitating this visit and to Mr. D. V. Purushottam and the ASCE MBU Student Chapter for their efforts in organizing the event successfully.

A guided field visit to a real construction site offers students valuable insights into civil engineering challenges and solutions.
