Promoting recycling, waste reduction, and conservation practices within the park

October 26

Promoting recycling, waste reduction, and conservation practices within the park Organised by NSS UNIT School ofEngineering, MBU. Department of Mechanical Engineering

In a vibrant initiative to promote environmental responsibility, SV Zoological Park joined hands with Mechanical Engineering students for a Recycling and Conservation Campaign on October 26, 2024. This event, was part of Week 2 of the NSS community project titled “Promoting Recycling, Waste Reduction, and Conservation Practices within the Park.” The Mechanical Engineering students took proactive steps to collect waste plastic throughout the park, transforming it into thought-provoking displays that underscore the dangers of plastic waste on wildlife. These creative displays—including sculptures and visual installations—have become powerful educational tools within the park. Each model, crafted from recycled materials, represents themes of wildlife and environmental conservation, capturing visitors’ attention and sparking conversations on reducing single-use plastics and waste.

Educational Engagement and Awareness

Beyond visual displays, the students organized interactive workshops to engage park visitors directly. Through hands-on activities, visitors learned about waste management, recycling processes, and simple ways to cut down on single-use plastics in their daily routines. This program provided an avenue for people of all ages to understand the impact of their choices on the environment and inspired them to adopt eco-friendly habits. By emphasizing small, everyday actions, the campaign helped visitors realize how minor adjustments can lead to significant, positive impacts on wildlife and the planet.

Outcomes

  • Plastic-Free Drive: This impactful initiative by MBU students and zoo staff led to a significant reduction in plastic waste within SV Zoological Park, highlighting the collective responsibility toward a plastic-free environment.
  • Increased Environmental Awareness: Informative displays and workshops raised awareness among visitors, emphasizing the importance of recycling and sustainable choices.
  • Innovative Use of Recycled Materials: Students creatively used recycled plastic to construct eye-catching models that depict wildlife and ecosystems, illustrating the harmful effects of pollution and the potential of recycling.
